In Part 1, I shared tips on how to identify toxic traits early on. Now, let’s dive into 4 more ways to spot red flags in dating and make sure you’re choosing someone who’s ready for a healthy, loving partnership.
5. Observe How They Treat Others
How someone acts around friends, family, or even strangers can tell you a lot about their character. Are they kind or entitled? Do they speak respectfully or gossip? The way they treat others often shows how they’ll treat you in a relationship.
6. Communicate Your Needs Early On
Be honest about what you need and expect in a relationship. See how the other person responds. Someone who respects and values you will want to listen and have open conversations. If they take feedback personally or react defensively, it might mean they’re not ready for a healthy connection.
7. Look for Mutual Effort
Healthy relationships are about balance and teamwork. Notice if the person puts in effort or expects you to do all the work. If you feel like you’re the only one trying, this could be a sign of entitlement or a martyr attitude—both of which create imbalance.
8. Be Honest About Your Own Boundaries
It’s perfectly okay to walk away if someone continues showing toxic traits. Protecting your heart is the most important thing. It’s not your job to fix or save someone who isn’t willing to grow with you. You deserve a partner who respects your boundaries and values your well-being.
By understanding these toxic traits and recognizing them early, you are setting yourself up for a healthy and happy relationship. You deserve to feel respected, loved, and valued for who you truly are.
